Caroline Menjivar Outraises Daniel Hertzberg in Latest Campaign Finance Reporting Period for State Senate District 20

Menjivar raised $208,317.87 compared to $187,525.00 for Hertzberg since July 1st

San Fernando Valley, CA – California’s 20th State Senate District Candidate Caroline Menjivar raised a total of $208,317.87 in the latest California state campaign finance reporting period. She raised $20,792.87 more than her opponent, Daniel Hertzberg in the same time period.

“I am grateful to every supporter who contributed to our campaign and helped build a grassroots movement to bring much needed change and representation to our State Capitol,” stated Menjivar. “We’ve engaged residents in every part of the San Fernando Valley and Burbank and are bringing new people to our democratic process. We’re going to continue building on this momentum in the next 39 days to victory.”

Menjivar received contributions from 646 donors with an average donation of $323.08. By comparison, Hertzberg had 78 reported itemized contributions with an average contribution of $2,401.79.

“This is a game changer,” stated Danielle Cendejas, Menjivar’s strategist. “Caroline Menjivar has more resources to compete in this race than her previously well-funded opponent. San Fernando Valley and Burbank residents are sending a message that they want a State Senator who has experience and knows how inequity affects working families. She’s continuing to build on the momentum that propelled her into a top-two finish in the primary and is in solid position to win in November.”

Menjivar overcame tough odds to earn a spot in the top-two. Her opponent, Daniel Hertzberg, is the son of terming out State Senator Bob Hertzberg. In the primary, Hertzberg raised five-times the amount that she did and benefited from an additional $276,117.21 in independent expenditures funded by Chevron, the CA Apartment Association, PG&E, Charter Public Schools PAC, PHRMA PAC, Davita, and many more. Menjivar raised $141,000 and finished within 1.1% of Hertzberg.

Senate District 20 has a Latino Citizen Voting Age Population of 50.2%. The Latina Democratic candidates in the race earned 47,151 votes or 43.6% of the total voted.

Menjivar announced her campaign for State Senate on August 19th, 2021. Menjivar has earned the support of the Democratic Party of the San Fernando Valley, California Environmental Voters, California Federation of Teachers, Los Angeles College Faculty Guild, AFSCME 3299, San Fernando Valley Young Democrats, LA County Democratic Party Young Democrats, California Latino Legislative Caucus, Equality California, Fund Her, NARAL Pro Choice California Privacy PAC, East Valley Indivisibles, Northridge Indivisibles, VoteVets, LPAC, California Democratic Legislative Women’s Caucus, Latinas Lead California, CA Women’s List, Feminists in Action Los Angeles, National Association of Social Workers CalPACE, Senator Connie Leyva, Senator Maria Elena Durazo, Senator Henry Stern, Senator Scott Wiener, Senator Susan Talamantes Eggman, Senator Cecilia Aguiar Curry, Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes, Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, Burbank Vice Mayor Konstantine Anthony, and numerous San Fernando Valley community advocates. About Caroline Menjivar:

Caroline Menjivar has overcome difficult odds in pursuit of service to our communities and country. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, Menjivar watched her parents, immigrants from El Salvador, work tirelessly to put food on the table and ensure she had access to quality public schools. At 18, Menjivar and her family found themselves victims of the subprime mortgage crisis and lost their home. The economic downturn continued to interfere with Menjivar’s dream of serving others. Unable to get a job as a firefighter with the City of Los Angeles, Caroline enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served from 2009 – 2016. Serving under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, Menjivar was forced to hide her relationship with her girlfriend, now wife. After serving on active duty, Menjivar returned to work as an EMT, earned her Bachelor of Arts from California State University, Northridge, and continued her education at UCLA, completing a Master of Social Welfare while working in the Los Angeles Mayor’s Gender Equity Office as a David Bohnett Fellow.

Menjivar served as a field deputy with Councilwoman Nury Martinez’s office and then as East Valley Representative for Mayor Eric Garcetti, where she organized the San Fernando Valley’s first ever LGBTQ+ Pride Car Parade. She volunteers her time serving on the GLSEN Los Angeles Chapter Board and The Help Group’s Kaleidoscope Advisory Board. Both organizations work to create more inclusive learning and family environments for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults. She also advocates for veterans and military families and currently is a San Fernando Valley Marine Corps League Board Member. Menjivar is a homeowner in Panorama City, where she resides with her wife and two dogs.

Senate District 20 is situated in the heart of the San Fernando Valley and includes the cities of Burbank, San Fernando and the communities of Arleta, Canoga Park, Lake Balboa, Lakeview Terrace, Mission Hills, North Hills, North Hollywood, Northridge, Pacoima, Panorama City, Reseda, Sun Valley, Sunland-Tujunga, Sylmar, Toluca Lake, Van Nuys, Winnetka.
